Arena 06 - Happy

The last few hours before the Arena have a strangely stifled quality, as if half the people they interact with are trying very hard not to laugh. Maybe it's the costumes, the fancy gowns and velvet tunics, the short capes. Or maybe it's their destination.

The round courtyard to which the tubes bring them could not be more different from the last arena. Though outside the circle of pedestals, disrepair and neglect has taken over the roads and buildings, the garden inside the circle could not be more perfectly sculpted. Every hedge is a smooth, rounded shape. Flowers bloom brightly in concentric circles of insane color. The Cornucopia sits gleaming and golden, and just in front of its mouth, a bronze statue of a man and a mouse stands amid the heap of supplies.

20, shouts the voice from the sky.

Aside from it, there is a hush. No flies in the flowers, no wind in the trees. It is a cool day, with the comfortable chill of early spring and noon's short shadows.

19 - 18 - 17

Outside the circle, behind the tributes on the northern side, a castle looms. Through its wide gate, devastation everywhere, but it, itself, is shining clean, glowing pink and blue. Opaque windows look down from the heights of it, as uncaring as every hidden camera the veterans know is there.

12 - 11

Music starts as the countdown nears the bottom, a whimsical, dramatic tune.

And with the final note, the gong rang out, and a firework shot into the sky from the castle's peak, bright enough to burst redly across the sky above them all. Let the Games begin.

((OOC NOTES: IF YOUR CHARACTER HAS POWERS THE CAPITOL HAS NERFED, make sure you are on this list.

Ian was heading away from anyone who looked dangerous. He didn't recognise Eponine at first, except that she was dressed in orange, the same as him, and realised who she must be and caught up with her. "Are you all right?" She looked uninjured so far.

"Monsiuer!" Eponine smiled, startled, and hurriedly dropped a curtsey. She could have been anywhere but in the centre of a bloodbath, for the dreamy look on her face.

"Isn't it beautiful? A CASTLE! It is as if from a fairy story. Sir, never have I seen anything so lovely!"

"It's not the usual castle colour." Which would have made him suspicious, except that he was in an area where he was suspicious anyway.

He looked around to make sure no one was about to attack them. "I think we should get under cover."

"Is it not, Monsieur? I do not know... I've never seen one, except in my head." She smiled, and touched her head lightly with a finger.
"Sometimes it is when it is snowing badly, and 'Zelma and I are left to sit on the street, I closed my eyes and told her we were in a castle, with a big, warm fire and blankets and food and drink, all for us..."

She took a step closer to the castle, still staring up at it.

"I don;t care if they kill me. But I would like to see inside before I die - so that I can say, Monsieur, that I have been to a castle."

He gave her a sympathetic look - he felt sorry for her, left out in the street when it was snowing. "Usually they're made of stone." And often crumbling, but that was only in the 20th century when time and attacks had taken their toll.

"Let's see inside, then." It might be a good place to watch out for other people, like castles were traditionally good for. He started off towards it, looking around to check no one else was about, and checking Eponine was following him.

Eponine frowned. Sympathy was awful. She didn't say if for him to feel sorry for her; it was merely a fact.

But as he said they could go in, she grinned. "Can we? Can we really?" She practically bounced on her heels, laughing at the thought of going into the castle. She was truly like a child having their first experience of Disneyland. So of course she followed him, dancing towards the entrance.

"Do you think there are things inside? Like a big bed - and food and a fireplace and a chair - what are the princess' chairs called? And..."

She dropped her voice to a whisper, "Gold... and coins and precious stones that glitter, like the king wears?"

Ian laughed at her enthusiasm. "Maybe," he said, not wanting to dash her hopes just like that. Besides, given the look of it from the outside, it might look like a fairy castle inside too. "But given where we are I wouldn't count on it."

As they crossed the bridge leading to the castle Ian ripped a flagpole down to use as a weapon, just in case.

Eponine doesn't bother to arm herself. If she's going to die in the castle, she's going to die, and that's that. As they approach the castle, and it's state of disrepair becomes obvious, her smile falters and reality starts to kick in.

Stupid, Eponine. Stupid. Stupid, stupid, STUPID. She had let the magic overwhelm her. She had let her guard down whilst she marvelled at her surroundings. She had half forgotten what she was in an arena.

Much less excited now, she bowed her head, and trudged forwards, her hands balled into fists.

"There's bound to be something here," Ian said, seeing Eponine's reaction. It didn't look terribly cared for, though, and that became more obvious the closer they got. It made Ian wonder what was behind the door.

He opened the door to darkness. Ian hefted his makeshift weapon and half-stepped in, leaving one foot outside - he wouldn't put it past this place to shut the door on them. "Let's wait until our eyes adjust," he suggested.

Eponine pushes past Ian and into the darkness.

"If there is a man waiting to kill us in here, then they will kill us anyway. I would rather not give them the opportunity whilst I wait to see."

She was used to walking down dark alleys in the pitch black, with the threats of cut throats and thieves all around and she wasn't remotely scared. Just... fed up. So she trudged on past and into the darkness, peering into the gloom.

"There is nobody here, Monsieur." Her voice echoed in the gloom.

He couldn't let her go in there on her own, so he sighed and followed her. "I'm glad to hear that." Although he wasn't entirely convinced there wasn't someone hiding, just waiting to jump out at them. Just opening the door had made enough noise to alert anyone in here that there was someone coming.

"I don't think anyone's been here for a while," he concluded as he walked into a cobweb and put a hand on a wooden chair that then fell apart.

"This is a strange place." Eponine strained her eyes to take in the largely empty castle. "It does not look like what I imagined. It looks emptier. I do not think I like it... but perhaps it will be a good place to shelter if it rains, or at night when it is colder? What shall we do? Go further?"

"It might be," he agreed. It wouldn't be the most comforting place to sleep, but it would be dry and warmer than outside.

"We might as well see if there's anything in here we can use." Ian's eyes were starting to adjust to the dark, but so far all he could see was falling apart furniture and there were only so many rotting pieces of wood you could use for a weapon.
