Arena 06 - Happy

The last few hours before the Arena have a strangely stifled quality, as if half the people they interact with are trying very hard not to laugh. Maybe it's the costumes, the fancy gowns and velvet tunics, the short capes. Or maybe it's their destination.

The round courtyard to which the tubes bring them could not be more different from the last arena. Though outside the circle of pedestals, disrepair and neglect has taken over the roads and buildings, the garden inside the circle could not be more perfectly sculpted. Every hedge is a smooth, rounded shape. Flowers bloom brightly in concentric circles of insane color. The Cornucopia sits gleaming and golden, and just in front of its mouth, a bronze statue of a man and a mouse stands amid the heap of supplies.

20, shouts the voice from the sky.

Aside from it, there is a hush. No flies in the flowers, no wind in the trees. It is a cool day, with the comfortable chill of early spring and noon's short shadows.

19 - 18 - 17

Outside the circle, behind the tributes on the northern side, a castle looms. Through its wide gate, devastation everywhere, but it, itself, is shining clean, glowing pink and blue. Opaque windows look down from the heights of it, as uncaring as every hidden camera the veterans know is there.

12 - 11

Music starts as the countdown nears the bottom, a whimsical, dramatic tune.

1

And with the final note, the gong rang out, and a firework shot into the sky from the castle's peak, bright enough to burst redly across the sky above them all. Let the Games begin.

((OOC NOTES: IF YOUR CHARACTER HAS POWERS THE CAPITOL HAS NERFED, make sure you are on this list.

And everyone really should review the arena post. Because there's a little more to play with than you might think.

And please remember to add your character's tag to each post they're in.))

Draco | OTA

It was his fourth Arena, if he recalled correctly - they were all starting to blur together - and he was starting to see the entire thing as almost routine. There was no excitement when he was dressed in the strangely ridiculous get-up, though Draco did feel a bit more at home in it than the last few outfits they'd thrown him in; there was little interest when he actually went up the tube and finally opened his eyes to things. Just mild curiosity as to what sort of nastiness this one would bring.

It was certainly different, the whole Arena. Bloody disconcerting, if Draco had any say in the matter. But he'd get used to it. He didn't have much of a choice.

And then the gong rang out, and he hit the ground running, off like a shot towards the Cornucopia and the few scattered objects that lay there.

This was Gabriel's first arena that he would be in from the start. His heart was pounding in his chest and his hands were shaking. Without his powers, he was confident he could survive for a while, but not indefinitely and probably not longer than the people here who were used to not having powers.

As the countdown ended, it took him just a fraction of a second and then he was moving, running as fast as he could towards the nearest bag. Whatever was in there, he needed it. Food, he could figure out, but he'd nearly frozen to death in that other place, so who knew what they would throw at him this time? He was hoping for some kind of tool or weapon, but anything they thought was useful enough to make them fight over it would probably be worth it.

He didn't even notice Draco at first as his vision focused in on that one bag.

Draco had gotten lucky last time. It had been his first time at the Cornucopia, and he had gotten away with a brilliant haul until his own stupidity caused his untimely death. He could have made it further, he knew. He refused to go down without a fight this time. And even though there weren't that many weapons this time around, Draco wasn't deterred.

He caught a glimpse of Gabriel going for the same bag quickly enough, and immediately dodged sideways - towards the other man - with hopes of running into him and sending him off-balance.

When Gabriel caught Draco out of the corner of his eye, he tried to fall back and dart to the side, but he misjudged their distance and instead of avoiding Draco, he watched Draco come perilously closer into his personal space.

He grabbed at Draco as he tipped over, trying to pull him down, too. If he was going down, he was taking the asshole with him.

He grunted, biting down on a shriek of displeasure as Gabriel grabbed him; as if his balance hadn't been thrown off already by the very movement he had initiated, one of his feet caught on his cape - bloody thing; he'd have to be sure to get rid of it later - and just helped him down. He crashed into the other man, scrambling to get a grip on him right back. He wasn't just going to let that bag go without a fight.

Unfortunately, neither was Gabriel. Being a pretty vindictive guy, his feeling was that if he couldn't get to the bag, the guy who'd knocked him over sure as hell wasn't getting it. He tried to scramble away towards the bag, shoving at Draco with his palms to push him off and in the opposite direction.

Draco figured he would have to fight a little to get there. He was hoping he wouldn't sustain any major injuries; it wouldn't do him any favours later on in the game. That meant doing his best to cause as much damage to Gabriel instead, lashing out to grab the other man, to slash at whatever he could reach, and to drag him backwards. Whatever worked well enough to give Draco the opportunity to bounce back from that shove, scrambling back towards the bag, even if it meant going over Gabriel.

Gabriel was small, but he was scrappy. Any time Draco seemed to get the upper hand, Gabriel would grab for him and try to drag him back hard. Still, this wasn't his sort of fighting. He was used to having powers and a blade and this was harder than a lot of humans made it look. More than once, he groaned with the effort it took to keep Draco from the bag.

Those grunts and groans were an excellent sign, if for no other reason than the fact that Draco thought that he might have a bit more experience fighting people off. Not much more, granted, but it was worth something. Neither of them seemed to be making a whole lot of headway, not by Draco's count, though he wasn't exactly capable of seeing a whole lot from where they were scuffling; finally, he made a grab for Gabriel's cape, hoping to choke him for a moment or two. Long enough to get ahead a bit more, perhaps get in an opportunity to take out the other man in some sort of slightly more permanent way.

No. No way was Gabriel going down like that. He pulled his leg up to kick out at Draco. Maybe the bag was a lost cause, but he wouldn't be one. He just had to get out of here and form a game plan for this place. He could do that.

He yanked at his own cape, trying to roll away to the side.

Draco merely gave another sharp yank in return, trying to scramble back up to his feet in hopes of getting to that bag. Merlin help him, he'd get to it one way or another, even if he had to strangle this Tribute with his bare hands. And that was an insult to himself already, having to do something with his own two hands. But he let him roll, not bothering to follow him though his intent was still to choke him. "It's mine," Draco managed to hiss out with a grunt of effort, his feet slipping beneath him as Gabriel yanked at his own cape.
casa_gabriel: (oh please)

[personal profile] casa_gabriel 2013-04-01 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"In your dreams, sweetcheeks." He grabbed at Draco any way he could, because he refused to lose this. He refused.

And that was when he saw legs dashing by his head and he watched as someone else snatched the bag they'd both been going for. With an angry growl, he swung his fist at the side of Draco's head. If there was no bag, he needed to just get away.
mudbloodhater: (look at this mad lensflare)

[personal profile] mudbloodhater 2013-04-02 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Taken completely off-guard by the 'sweetcheeks' comment, Draco whirled as best he could to give Gabriel an incredulous stare. Just in time to see that fist coming towards him; it gave him just enough time to turn away a little, taking the blow more to the back of his head instead of the temple or his face, but it still hurt like hell. He gave another half-hearted attempt at a gouge towards Gabriel's midsection, stars dancing in front of his eyes.
casa_gabriel: (are you shitting me?)

[personal profile] casa_gabriel 2013-04-02 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't the first time Gabriel's witty repartee had helped him out. He couldn't help being handsome and brilliant.

"Can you fight less like a girl? Kay, thanks."

Speaking of how awesome Gabriel was, he slipped his knee between them for leverage and shoved hard at Draco. This was it. He just wanted to get away and get his hands on something useful for maiming and killing.

"Can you just fuck off?" Draco gasped out in response, not caring how it sounded. It was petty, certainly, but he was beyond that mattering to him. The knee to his stomach took the rest of the fight out of the blond, though; he choked out another curse, hands clinging angrily to what he could grab of Gabriel's, though he was sure it wasn't going to do much. The bag was gone, and all he could say he got out of it was a major desire for revenge against this prick. But he'd let him go all the same, if it meant getting out relatively unscathed.
casa_gabriel: (Annoyance)

[personal profile] casa_gabriel 2013-04-02 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm trying, sweetheart." Gabriel finally managed to roll away and rise to a crouch. He was tempted to round back on Draco and kick him a few times, but fuck it. He really just wanted to get the fuck out of dodge, so he pushed himself up the rest of the way and forced himself to run.

Oh, boy, was he going to remember that little shit's face.
