ARENA 10-Placid Hollow

The Tributes are taken early in the morning, most of their support teams seeming in good cheer as they dress them in warm clothes, getting them to their tubes. There is obvious comfort in the familiar for the prep teams, and they chatter with, or in some cases, over the heads of their Tributes as they get them ready and load them up.

If the Tributes could see the area they are passed up into, they would see a deeply overgrown, dilapidated town green, with a large bandstand rotting away in the middle. The spoils of the cornucopia are not gathered in one spot, instead scattered throughout the thigh high grass and weeds around the town green.

Around the edge of the green, the old business stand a silent sentry, looming out of the fog as it thins and winds into them, providing much desired cover.

But the Tributes cannot see the ground around them. The fog, thicker even than it will be in the rest of the arena, makes the world small around them. The sound of the count down echoes strangely, the tributes seeming too close as the fog brings sounds of their breath, their coughing, the snap of twigs under their feet right to ears of the other Tributes. But with the fog bringing visibility down to only a few feet, it's hard to tell what is a true danger, and what is only the fog playing tricks on them,.

The gong rings out, and the countdown's voice announces "the Arena is now open". The Games have begun.

"It probably is," Ian agreed. "Based on previous arenas there could anything around here, up to and including obstacles and things that will kill us." Because people blundering around the fog getting lost wouldn't make good television, for one thing.

"Didn't expect they'd play nice," because why would their captors make it easier to survive a death match. The struggle, the fights, the beasts, it makes for better sport and that's all their lives amount to The Capitol, entertainment.

Steve held a low hanging branch aside for the man. "I'm Steve, by the way."
splendid_roman: (Isn't he a splendid looking Roman?)

"Ian." He nodded his thanks for the branch holding. "Is this your first arena?" The things Steve had said and done so far made him wonder.

"That obvious, huh?" Steve sounds almost amused, but it also concerns him. It's not like he wants to be targeted, yet he can't just be cold from the get go. Cautious sure, but he rather help people.

"What number is this for you?"
splendid_roman: (Thinking)

[personal profile] splendid_roman 2014-05-27 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Five." He didn't mention that two of them he hadn't lasted a day in. "You do sound like you're not sure what to expect, whereas the rest of us are a little jaded, I think."

Five is a pretty big number, he's not surprised how that could jade someone. It'd be more shocking if it didn't. It wasn't that Steve wasn't wary or unaware, he's watched videos and got plenty advice, but learning about this and actually being in it are two different things.

It feels like a battle field but not war. There's nothing to tell him who's an ally and who's not. No uniforms, no sides, just a bloodbath.

"No better teacher than experience," it's wry humor, but also honest.

Ian chuckled. "There is definitely something to be said for experience." And wry humour. Or any sort of humour in the arena, really. "But experience isn't everything. Nor is power or weapons, when the Gamemakers can just set monsters on you or change the weather at a moment's notice."

Steve isn't surprised to hear it, having seen it in the videos. "Good thing, I'm sorta used to circumstances not being in my favor." Very used to it. "So go with the punches, huh?"
splendid_roman: (Smiling)

[personal profile] splendid_roman 2014-05-30 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ian chuckled. "Something like that."

He stopped at the house they'd just reached. "This looks like a good a place as any to hide out for a bit." Assuming no one else was up there, of course. But since it had two storeys he should be able to look out and see what was coming.

Steve was about to reply, before a series of loud whistles sound in the distance. They catch Steve's attention, making him quickly suss-out the meaning in morse code. He decides not to reply, figuring it might not be for him, but it's his best guess it is.

Turning back to Ian, he gives the man a small smile. "Want me to make sure the place is clear?" This sort of thing is second nature to Steve, making sure a place is empty before use. Besides, he has time and a weapon, he doesn't mind.

Ian had learnt some Morse Code during his National Service, but it was a while ago and he was rusty. He thought he caught the odd letter, but given how intently the other man was listening, Ian thought he understood it. It didn't matter anyway, Ian wasn't really on the look out for large crowds.

"It'll be quicker with both of us." He went to the front door and opened it cautiously, peering around.

Steve stays close, but he lets Ian take the lead since the man went for the door first. To be honest, he's curious to see what he'll do, but also he's waiting to follow Ian in, so he can look in the rooms that the other man doesn't, check for others. Still, he peers through the door over Ian's head, his voice wryly curious, "If we yell 'is anyone in here' do you think they'd answer?"
splendid_roman: (Concern)

[personal profile] splendid_roman 2014-06-05 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't, if I were in here." He didn't think there could be long enough yet that anyone could have set up traps, although that didn't stop there from being any ready-made ones.

There didn't seem to be any sign of life, so he went inside, just as cautiously. Although it made a nice change, being able to see properly, without any fog in the house. When he came to the first room off the hall he looked around it. So far the house seemed to be empty.

Yeah, Steve probably wouldn't either.

Following Ian in, he moves on to the next room, cautious, looking for traps as he goes. Mindy had warned him of traps, also told him to make and use them, so he knew to look, keep an eye out.

Doing a quick sweep of the room, he finds it empty too. "Clear," he says it quietly, just enough for Ian to hear it but not travel too far into the building.

Ian continued through the house, not finding any people or traps either. He relaxed after that, glad they'd found a place that was safe and defensible.

"I'll camp out here," he said, thinking about what he could do to it to make sure no one else thought the same thing. "Thanks for the help."

Steve made sure to double check along the way, not wanting this guy to have someone sneak up on him. It would weigh on him if he learned Ian died shortly after leaving him here.

Giving a small smile at being thanked - even if he doesn't think it's necessary - Steve pats Ian's shoulder kindly. "Take care. I'm sure I'll be seeing you around," it's a good guess to say it won't be the last time they meet. Maybe not in the arena, but they'll meet again.

He'll take his leave then, needing to find his allies and secure a place for them to camp out as well.

(ooc: If you want Ian to stop him before he leaves, go for it ouo)

[personal profile] splendid_roman 2014-06-12 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"I will," he promised. "You be careful too." He didn't want someone who'd been helpful getting killed too horribly. It wasn't as if the arena was full of people willing to help.

He headed further inside the house, although went to a window to watch the man go. Just in case Steve had any other motives for knowing where Ian could be found.

None, no other motives. Once outside Steve heads towards the cornucopia again, not looking back. He really does wish Ian well, even if he knows the chances of both of them dying is pretty much certain.
