ARENA 09 - THE MUSEUM

The Tributes are woken up early for this Arena, and switched from whatever sleeping attire they're currently in to a set of pajamas, each designed for the individual in questions. Women wear onesies, and most of the men wear two-pieces, but other than that any similarities are at random - the outfits are in all sorts of colors and patterns.

The floor of the helicopter taking them to their Arena location, and of the underground entrance to the tubes that hoist them to the surface, will feel cold under their bare feet.

Rather than bringing them to sunlight, like the tubes have in the past, instead the Tributes are presented to a dark concrete ceiling in a badly-lit parking lot. Fluorescent lights do little to illuminate the cavernous space.

The countdown begins, announced as if from far away.

The Cornucopia, a ghastly thing carved from stone and concrete, sits at the center of a pattern of white and yellow lines reminiscent of spots for parked cars. The painted lines create a sort of spoked wheel, providing lanes for the Tributes leading to the prizes at the center. Some of the more unfortunate Tributes will find the concrete architecture has placed pillars in their lanes.

Six parked cars lie around the outskirts of the huge lot, barely visible in the dim lighting. Glowing exit signs on two opposite sides of the chamber announce where Tributes should go to escape the bloodbath. Elevator doors are perched beneath them.

The gong rings out, and the countdown's voice announces "the Arena is now open". The Games have begun.

His pajamas could not have been more poorly chosen, but after the tumult of the Cornucopia Sam's last thought was for his wardrobe. He'd escaped with minimal injury, and without injuring anyone else beyond a little shoving. But he had also realized that some of the contestants were serious--and that if he wanted to live, he'd have to be able to defend himself.

He was well aware of his skills in doing so. But some of them had weapons, and he did not. So, consulting his map of the museum, he'd located the most likely place to find something and headed there, to the second floor. He moved quickly and quietly, obviously well used to subterfuge, but hoping he wouldn't meet anyone who would test him on his resolve not to kill anyone.

Not yet, anyway.

Zelos' first thought had been for his wardrobe, because hey, that was a valid complaint. Bright pink and red pajamas were definitely not gonna help in blending in or hiding. So after he changed into something more practical, his next order of business was to find some weapons.

When his eyes catch sight of the weapon displays, with one or two already broken into, he tried to keep a wary eye out as he made a beeline for it, but it wasn't until he was three feet away from the display case that he saw the other guy who'd been coming up from the opposite side of the case.

Thinking quickly, Zelos snatched the closest weapon to him, and hissed as he cut himself on the broken glass in his haste. He held up the slightly rusty dagger in front of him as a warning, a slightly strained smile on his face. "Hey, buddy. Don't make me use this on you."

Instinctively, Sam grabbed up the closest weapon to him, which turned out to be a long knife or short dagger, something like a machete perhaps. Dull and blunt, most likely. But as he looked at the other guy, his other hand slowly rose.

"Look," he said, soft but urgent. "I don't want to use this either. I just came looking for a weapon. Okay?" Right, because that sounded really trustworthy. "For self-defense. So. Don't make me use this on you."

"Funny, I said the exact same thing," Zelos said, with a careless grin.

What the other guy was saying was so ironic, it earned that grin. Came looking for a weapon that he didn't want to use. Sure.

They faced off, Sam not taking his eyes off the guy. He really, really didn't want to fight. But he didn't want to die. At least, not like this. Not for someone's entertainment.

"What if we both just... walk away?" he suggested, swallowing. Back away, more likely. He wasn't about to trust anyone here, but that didn't mean he wanted to prove it.

"Sure, let's just walk away, on three?" he said, almost jokingly but for the serious look in his eyes. He wanted to actually get a feel for how this game worked before going after people. He might need allies, after all, and this guy looked like he knew what he was doing since he went for a weapon first too.

"Well, I was going to opt for backing away," Sam confessed. "It seems kind of pointless for us to kill each other, I mean, considering the trouble we've just gone to."
