ARENA 11-PaneMall
It’s pre-dawn when the Tributes are roused from their beds and sent to their tubes. Those who’d been imprisoned for the past few weeks had their heads covered before transport to the staging area, and there’s an air of confusion surrounding just about everything that’s happening until the stylists and managers arrive on the scene and try to calm everyone down. The reunions may be happy, but they're sadly very temporary.
The first clue that something strange is happening comes from their clothing: figure skating costumes with bright colors and sequins and ice skates strapped to their feet. Some may even find it difficult to stand with the blades on their feet, but as they're placed into the arena, all becomes clear. The mall skating rink seems quiet and quaint, especially after weeks of uncertainty and stress. Too bad the peace and quiet can’t last.

Above the ice rink (which houses all 100+ Tributes) there are floors with shops looking over them. Large, bright fluorescent lights dot the multi-storied ceiling and create a warm, nostalgic glow to the place. Benign music is piped in from various hidden speakers to compliment the intended mood of fun and commerce.

The countdown continues and the Tributes, some of whom haven’t seen each other in weeks, stare at one another helplessly. That is, until one of them boldly decides to speak.
"We're expected to fight here today," Steve's voice suddenly cuts through the tension in the room. It commands attention without demanding it, a conviction of truth in his tone.

"To turn on each other through fear and self preservation. And we could give them what they want. A bloodbath," here he pauses longer, lets the reality of his statements sink in. Let people realize what he's saying, that this is a choice.
"Or we can choose not to fight. To instead work together," an option so many seem not to even realize they have. "No one here has to die by our hands today," he knows his speaking won't be without consequence, but he does want to believe he'll be the only one to pay for this.
"This is a risk. One many of you are hesitant to trust, let alone take. But everything we do here is a risk to ourselves and those around us," nothing in the arena comes without putting your life on the line.
"I, for one, am willing to take this risk, to choose not to fight," Steve looks around the room, making eye contact with a few people as he does. He's not telling anyone what to do, this is for them to decides for themselves; their freedom of choice.
But he's got faith in the his fellow tributes. "And I've got a feeling I'm not alone.”

After the countdown ends, there’s a moment of utter still and silence. Then...
BOOOOOOOOOOOM
The room seems to erupt with noise and concussive force. The explosions are so violent that the muzak is paused in its tracks and shakes some of the Tributes off of their pedestals, and after the ice fog and smoke clears, it becomes apparent that fifteen of the Tribute pedestals and exploded there on the ice rink. Fifteen corpses lie mangled on the bloody ice: Deanna Winchester, Danny Fenton, Fili, Kili, Kain Highwind, Perry Kelvin, Julian Bashir, Clint Barton, Karkat Vantas, Sirius Black, Rahm Kota, Cinderella, Bunnymund, Robin, Rock Lee, and Rokk Krin.
The center of the ice rink remains completely intact and stocked with a few dozen keys of varying shapes and sizes. This is the Cornucopia and the Gamemakers are compelling the Tributes to skate for it.
The gong rings out, and the countdown's voice announces “The Arena is now open.” The Games have begun.

Re: Rose Lalonde | Open
"Rose," she said, once she skated up to the girl. "How're you holding up?"
no subject
"Mindy," she says carefully, and she's mindful of keeping an eye on everyone else. "I'm... managing. Yourself?"
no subject
"Nice costume."
no subject
Honestly, she hadn't expected to see Mindy here, but she supposes suspected traitors are still traitors, even if they won this stupid thing. And what better way is there to punish them?
Still, she snorts softly at her remark, glancing down out her outfit and then to Mindy's. "I could say the same for you. I guess they really do like themes."
no subject
She licked her lips. Damn it, she felt dry again, and that was bringing flashbacks she really didn't need right now. She was at least glad they were on the ice: it gave her something else to focus on.
"Hey, I don't know what you're talking about, I am rocking the SHIT out of this outfit. I'm just sad Oceana didn't have enough time to dye my hair again so it could match. If you're gonna stick to a theme, might as well let it do the work for you."
no subject
She smirks slightly at Mindy's little complaint, feeling herself ease up a touch. "I'm sure she's disappointed too. She does seem fond of going more alternative with hairstyles." She's heard after all from Dave about her opinions on undercuts though she hasn't found herself with the time to actually meet the queen. "Perhaps after this is all done. It would make an impact for a victor party." Not that she's certain Mindy will win, and she's sure they've stacked it against the supposed traitors, but she has at the very least done it before.
no subject
Mindy grinned. "Oh, you don't have to tell ME. She hated my pigtails and strong armed me into dyeing it. I didn't mind in the end though: it looked pretty good. I don't think I'm gonna make the win: a part of me doesn't want to, anyway. People are still here, one of them deserves that win. I hope its not a maniac, like the last guy. I'm hoping it'll be one of the kids, to be honest."
no subject
"I suppose they're too simple for her liking," her shrug is a an elegant roll of her shoulders, the hint of a smirk in Rose's lips. It fades all the same, seriousness taking over. "Perhaps. After all, it wouldn't look the best if one of us were to win. But we'll see." A slight nod, and a slight sad smile forms. "That's a noble way to go. I hope you succeed then." Even though she would count Mindy among the so called kids.
no subject
"I don't know, it might just be a matter of aesthetics. I don't have the mind of a drag queen, and she's a little on the less seasoned side, so I worry a little about her."
She shrugged. "I know what it takes to win, obviously. You have to want it, you have to be ready to eat it at anytime, and of course, you have to be willing to kill when the chips come down. Right now, the only one I can see actually doing that easily is Pruna, Clementine at her most desperate. Me, well, you know my deal."
Noble. That was almost funny.
no subject
"Aesthetics vary from person to person in truth." she says with the slightest nod. "Worry about her how? Scared she may have gotten herself in over her head?"
"Mm," she hums, soft and Rose looks away carefully, her expression unreadable. That's the issue in truth. Children were children and children didn't have the strength adults had. Didn't always have the ability of see the necessary grey in things. They would always been reliant on kinder adults here, and Rose couldn't count on anyone here to be that kind. Human nature was selfish and everyone wants to live. "I know, yes."
"If you need it... find me." she says after a pause, her offer of help short and curt. "I cannot promise much but I don't intend to actively hurt any children."
no subject
Yes, it just so happened to be Eva.
Mindy knew the rest to be true, too, that kids were less likely to win this thing as long as adults were around. They had to be MORE vicious, smarter and willing to weather everything that they could, and even then they had to also account for whatever the Arena threw at them.
"I'll do my best," Mindy promised. "If you're going to go all murderous of me, give me a heads up, huh?"
no subject
She doesn't care too much about whom it was, a tribute is a tribute and she's not at all that surprised to hear of someone assaulting a capitol member. There are plenty who aren't happy to be here, and new ones arrive all the time. All you needed was one that didn't understand the rules and punishments to the system and there would be a problem.
"I don't murder children," she says firmly if quietly and she seems to hold herself differently, more closed off. And it's true, aside from trolls, and one could argue that they didn't count, and even then Rose hadn't murdered any of them yet. And wasn't planning to for the time being. "You won't have anything to fear from me, at the very least."
no subject
After all, they only had to watch them getting tortured, right?
"Hey, don't get me wrong: if a kid is going for your ass, by all means, kill a motherfucker. But going out of your way to do it and enjoying that shit? That really tells a lot about how fucked up you are."
Not that she could talk, as someone who enjoyed killing the fuck out of bad guys.
