ARENA 11-PaneMall
It’s pre-dawn when the Tributes are roused from their beds and sent to their tubes. Those who’d been imprisoned for the past few weeks had their heads covered before transport to the staging area, and there’s an air of confusion surrounding just about everything that’s happening until the stylists and managers arrive on the scene and try to calm everyone down. The reunions may be happy, but they're sadly very temporary.
The first clue that something strange is happening comes from their clothing: figure skating costumes with bright colors and sequins and ice skates strapped to their feet. Some may even find it difficult to stand with the blades on their feet, but as they're placed into the arena, all becomes clear. The mall skating rink seems quiet and quaint, especially after weeks of uncertainty and stress. Too bad the peace and quiet can’t last.

Above the ice rink (which houses all 100+ Tributes) there are floors with shops looking over them. Large, bright fluorescent lights dot the multi-storied ceiling and create a warm, nostalgic glow to the place. Benign music is piped in from various hidden speakers to compliment the intended mood of fun and commerce.

The countdown continues and the Tributes, some of whom haven’t seen each other in weeks, stare at one another helplessly. That is, until one of them boldly decides to speak.
"We're expected to fight here today," Steve's voice suddenly cuts through the tension in the room. It commands attention without demanding it, a conviction of truth in his tone.

"To turn on each other through fear and self preservation. And we could give them what they want. A bloodbath," here he pauses longer, lets the reality of his statements sink in. Let people realize what he's saying, that this is a choice.
"Or we can choose not to fight. To instead work together," an option so many seem not to even realize they have. "No one here has to die by our hands today," he knows his speaking won't be without consequence, but he does want to believe he'll be the only one to pay for this.
"This is a risk. One many of you are hesitant to trust, let alone take. But everything we do here is a risk to ourselves and those around us," nothing in the arena comes without putting your life on the line.
"I, for one, am willing to take this risk, to choose not to fight," Steve looks around the room, making eye contact with a few people as he does. He's not telling anyone what to do, this is for them to decides for themselves; their freedom of choice.
But he's got faith in the his fellow tributes. "And I've got a feeling I'm not alone.”

After the countdown ends, there’s a moment of utter still and silence. Then...
BOOOOOOOOOOOM
The room seems to erupt with noise and concussive force. The explosions are so violent that the muzak is paused in its tracks and shakes some of the Tributes off of their pedestals, and after the ice fog and smoke clears, it becomes apparent that fifteen of the Tribute pedestals and exploded there on the ice rink. Fifteen corpses lie mangled on the bloody ice: Deanna Winchester, Danny Fenton, Fili, Kili, Kain Highwind, Perry Kelvin, Julian Bashir, Clint Barton, Karkat Vantas, Sirius Black, Rahm Kota, Cinderella, Bunnymund, Robin, Rock Lee, and Rokk Krin.
The center of the ice rink remains completely intact and stocked with a few dozen keys of varying shapes and sizes. This is the Cornucopia and the Gamemakers are compelling the Tributes to skate for it.
The gong rings out, and the countdown's voice announces “The Arena is now open.” The Games have begun.

She laughed. "No, are you kidding? Half these people aren't gonna know how to ice skate. They'll probably bang right into you like crippled fucking elephants."
no subject
After that thought, it didn't take long for her to realise that Mindy did have a good plan.
"Okay. How should I get on your back?"
no subject
Mindy got on one knee, careful, and brought her head and back toward the girl. "Climb up carefully. I'm not trying to get sliced in the face by your skate. Don't need a matching scratch for my injury, right?"
This was all insanity and bullshit, might as well be joking to ease her into it, right?
"What'd you say your name was again?"
no subject
Is all she says with a nod before she starts trying to get up, at first all she manages to achieve is slipping about and falling a few more times, but she does manage to somewhat awkwardly get her arms around Mindy's neck while trying not to stick her with her skates.
"Usagi, But Chibi-Usa is okay too"
no subject
"Usagi, huh? Like Usagi Yojimbo, that rabbit in the Turtle series. Ok, I'll stick to Usagi then. Easier than the Chibi thing. Ok, you got a good enough grip? I'm getting up now."
She rose slowly, waiting to make sure the girl wouldn't fall off.
no subject
At the reference to Usagi Yojimbo, Chibi-Usa tilts her head. "I haven't heard of that. But. Right now, it sounds like you sort of. I'd have to see how it's written."
no subject
"All right, hang tight," she said, and now she wasn't remotely playing around anymore. An attempted body check by someone landed them flat on their back, foolishly underestimating how good Mindy was with skating. They made Cornucopia and Mindy snagged a key, turning to Chibi Usa.
"Were you going for one?"
no subject
As Mindy really got moving, the younger girl really started to enjoy the feeling of going over the ice while being piggy-backed. Feeling just enough excitement to exclaim 'excuse you' poking out her tongue at the person who tried to hit them.
She shakes her head when asked about the key.
"Nhnn. I actually thought we were going to maybe be in a forest, so I only thought about climbing a tree."
no subject
Mindy was indignant, but hell, if she really didn't want a weapon, who was she to stop her? She was already trying to get the hell out of there, glad enough that she didn't fall. MAN, but she'd gotten much better with balance. Lucky for her.
"Glad we didn't fall. I don't think the scabbing on my thigh could have taken it at that point."
no subject
When Mindy mentions her thigh scabbing, Chibi-Usa raises her blades up.
"I haven't hurt you have I?" She sounded very worried.
no subject
She snickered. "No, trust me, that has nothing to do with you. I was imprisoned, remember? I didn't exactly get out of there freash as a daisy."
no subject
"Cherry blossoms are pink and in trees, I could have hidden in them Or azaleas."
Her pout turns more to a worried look.
"I could look at it? Minako taught me first aid."
Minako had been actually quiet terrible at it, but actually bandaging is something she could at least do, and she knew how to clean a wound.
no subject
"Yeah, ok." She showed the girl the wounds: vicious bruises on her wrists and legs, some pretty harsh slashes to her back, and some singed skin at the back of her neck.
no subject
"Oh no."
They look awful, but all beyond what she can really do to help. What she did do however, was pull up her sleeve and wipe as some of the slashes that were weeping a little.
"I... We, We need antiseptic cream, and some clothes." She looks up at Mindy hopefully. "You wouldn't know where those would be? Maybe?"
no subject
Which was a shame. She was hoping her wounds weren't infected. That would be the last thing she needed right now.
no subject
Bless her, she's trying so hard to be useful.
no subject
"Yeah, I don't see why not. Where would we boil the water though? Might have to find some matches for that."
no subject
"We're in a mall." Then she turns to mindy. "Maybe there's an urn in the food court for noodles and tea? In one of the food places?"
After all how different could American Food Courts be to Japanese ones?
no subject
Like, for dead people who were cremated?
"Probably, but someone would have to go get it. I guess I could do that too."
