He found himself a hatchet. It was decent enough - good heft in the handle, sturdy, useful for more than just killing. Joel wasn't particularly invested in winning this game they'd set up for them, but as always, he was invested in surviving. If death here was to be permanent, well, that was all the more reason for him to not die. Especially given that Ellie was probably watching.
He'd asked Kili to keep her away, at the crowning, but he knew better than to think anyone would be able to really do that. Not with so many of her friends here. At least, however this went, it would be short. Not more than a day, and it'd all be over, one way or the other.
Joel took what he could get.

After he'd apologized for killing Ellie, at least.
There were several pieces of jerky in front of him, and he grabbed a few, offering one to the alien.
"Yet," he said darkly. "Can't say I give a shit about winnin', but I'll be damned if I let them kill me for good without a fight." Ellie was waiting for him, after all. Ellie was all he cared about in the world.

"I'm not about to go down without a fight, either way. But I'd prefer to come back from this, I'm not about to leave Shepard or Thane here."
That wasn't why he flagged down Joel in the first place, not when they had an arena to win and items to collect.
"How many items have you collected so far?"

"It's not to eat, it's one of the tokens. Take it." In a way, it was his way of saying yes I agree, let's work together so we don't die for good.
If nothing else, Garrus had proved himself - with Ellie, and in general. And Joel kind of liked Shepard - she didn't fuck around, didn't play games. She was honest about who she was.
