He found himself a hatchet. It was decent enough - good heft in the handle, sturdy, useful for more than just killing. Joel wasn't particularly invested in winning this game they'd set up for them, but as always, he was invested in surviving. If death here was to be permanent, well, that was all the more reason for him to not die. Especially given that Ellie was probably watching.

He'd asked Kili to keep her away, at the crowning, but he knew better than to think anyone would be able to really do that. Not with so many of her friends here. At least, however this went, it would be short. Not more than a day, and it'd all be over, one way or the other.

Joel took what he could get.

District 10 pavilion

He was starting to get hungry - being such a short arena, he'd opted for a weapon instead of food. Joel wasn't a long-term planner, anyway. But after several hours of wandering and trying to avoid both traps and other tributes, he was definitely feeling the hunger pangs.

When he spotted the place with the beef jerky, he crept up toward it, planning to grab several pieces of it - he'd save one, for the scavenger hunt, and eat the rest.

District 4 area

The water was getting deeper. It didn't concern Joel too much - he was, after all, a strong swimmer, and it couldn't possibly be that deep anyway, right?

It wasn't until he started to feel things grabbing at his ankles that he began to get concerned. "Goddammit," he muttered, stumbling a little and nearly losing his balance. No way in hell was he gonna let himself get drowned.

District 3 area

Joel stopped when he saw the net, scowling fiercely. He didn't trust it, not one bit, and he was going to say as much to anyone else who happened to be nearby.

To say he never saw it coming would've been inaccurate. He knew this place was designed to kill people, expected death around every corner.

Still, a building collapse, well.

He threw himself away from it as soon as he saw the wall start to give, but there was a crash, and a hideous cracking sound, and a moment later the pain nearly blinded him, and he cried out with it.

When he could see well enough to get a look at the damage, it wasn't a pretty sight - the bone of his leg was sticking out, blood everywhere. Even if he could get the beams off himself, he wouldn't be walking again. "Goddamnit," he muttered, gasping for breath.
