Who | Max, Black Tom, Moltov
What | Max vs. Evil Duo
Where | Pine Forrest near the River
When | Backdated to Week 6 post fire
Warnings/Notes | Death
Heat. Even standing in the freezing river, Max could still feel the heat of fire that had so quickly arrived. So far the arena had been a quiet experience. Her reunion with Courfeyrac had been...pleasant? The word seemed too simple for what they had shared. It was clear that whatever had happened between herself and the Frenchman in the past had deeply affected him. It would be a lie to say that she wasn't feeling the same. Perhaps nothing as deep as what the older man felt, but there was something there lingering in the back of her memories, a connection that reminded her too much of Logan and yet was so different than what she shared with the hacker.
Max should have known that the peace wouldn't last.
She'd been hunting. The game was fairly easy to bring down for someone like her and she wasn't about to let them be taken down by something as simple as starvation. Zack would ha- No. That was another person she didn't want to think about in this place.
The scattering of animals large and small alerted to her to something being wrong and immediately she'd headed back to base where Courfeyrac still waited for her return. She ran fast, but she wasn't fast enough to beat the flames of the fire; flames that seemed alive.
"DOM! DOM!" She screamed for her friend even as she saw their snowy fort melt away. She was still too far and the heat was too much. Damn this place. There wasn't time to search as the fire seemed to hone in on her. It was a race to see which would make it to the river first. If only she was faster. If this was what it was like to be an Ordinary she wanted nothing to do with it.
Ahead of her the sound of the river called. Max dove into the freezing water as soon as she could; the coldness washing away the heat of the flames that had managed to touch her clothes and long hair. A minute went by before she emerged. Smoke and char was all that was left of the area. She tried hard not to think of what might be left of Courfeyrac. It didn't help.
Slowly she moved from the river and back towards the burnt trees. Perhaps the man had left the fort before the fire had arrived. Perhaps...perhaps...
God, hope sucked.

And then, fire. Even if it's not his fire, this is Tom's element. He predicts with great accuracy how the wildfire will spread, and gets himself and Molotov to the fringes of safety with ease.
"Molotov, dear." He sits on a rock at the mouth of the river, watching as smoke is kicked up in a smudgey cloud over the sky. Anyone who was resting near the lake will have to cross near here, where the water is calmest. "Keep an eye out for stragglers."

"Of course," she answers, as calmly as if he'd asked her to get him a glass of milk from the refrigerator.
