Who: Ken Hidaka & Open
What: Attempting to hunt
When: A few days after the cornucopia.
Where: Around E-10/E-11
Ken knew he'd be fighting for for his life, but this wasn't exactly what he expected. Days spent traipsing through woods, avoiding bears (bears!) and foraging for food wasn't really what he had in mind. After the cornucopia, the arena had seemed less like a bloodbath and more like a survival challenge.
He'd toughed it out without food the first day thinking things might wrap up quickly but by the second day he'd started foraging. Water was easily accessible but food was another matter. He'd erred on the side of caution, trying berries and mushrooms, spitting them out, waiting hours to see if there were any ill effects. (Berries were off the list entirely.)
The wildlife seemed like a safer bet, but that was easier said than done.
(He had a fleeting thought that some of those bags probably contained food and some of the other tributes would have gotten a hold of them. So if things came down to it... )
He wasn't in dire straights just yet. And you never knew unless you tried. Small animals were fast, highly maneuverable and bolted at the slightest provocation. Traps would have been more effective but when all you have is a machete. Now if that damned rabbit would stop dashing into their burrow.
Ken sighed and started walking around the area studying the ground as he went. There was bound to be another egress for the bunny. He tried to remember how big burrows could grow but realized he really had no idea. The only time he'd ever handled a rabbit had been in elementary school when his class kept it as a pet. That's would be the last time he felt sorry for a bunny in cage.

It's my fault. It's all my fault. She told herself over and over, while she carefully walked around the area who's only thought was on the unfortunate ends of her "brothers" and with whatever chances of surviving she had left.
Days went on, and she was all too used to hardly eating due to the fact that the scientists seemed to be cruel whenever the children didn't meet their ever so high expectations. Though with what little she knew about the world around her, she had the little knowledge that was transferred into her from the Cerberus Spine, Lily had knew the differences between a few berries here and there and was currently munching on a few that she had found to be perfectly safe.
Hearing a branch snap, she quickly turned on her heels to see an unfamiliar face a distance away. Seeing his hands on a machete, she immediately saw him as an enemy and fear surely enough overwhelmed her.
"Um..." she began, curling her fingers and clenching them into a fist, "Hello...?"

At first glance, she didn't look like much. Ken tried to remember if he had seen her at the beginning of the Games. It was possible but she obviously hadn't made an impression. Even now, she didn't look like a threat, but appearances could always be deceiving.
Just because she hadn't attacked yet didn't mean she was harmless. He kept the machete at the ready, more a precaution than anything, but didn't make a move to come any closer.
"Hi," Ken returned. His voice was neutral and slightly inquisitive. At the moment, he was willing to listen to whatever she had to say.

"I'm really glad to see that someone is okay!"
Though her words may sound completely childish, Lily was being nothing but honest. Even taking the time to have herself smile for a quick moment, it being the first one she's had since arriving in The Games.
And as if curious and interested for more answers, she simply asks, "What are you doing?"
no subject
"Hunting," he responds, "or trying to." He gives himself a mental slap then adds, quickly, "Rabbits."
He pauses just for a moment as if trying to decide whether or not to say what's on his mind. He does it anyway. "Don't take this the wrong way but shouldn't you be hiding or something?"
no subject
Well she should be doing that, to avoid any of the others that were blood thirsty enough to go straight for the kill. The young girl shook her head, but did hesitate on her next set of words which was proved obvious by a quick bite of her lip.
"But what if someone needs help?" Though they sounded childish, Lily had nothing more than pure honesty in every last bit of them, "Like you, I'm sure it'd be easier if we hunted together, right?"
no subject
He paused, obviously unsure how to proceed. "Um... so have you ever done anything like this before?" He really wasn't expecting her to, but it was as good of a topic as any.

If you consider genetically engineered monsters something like a harmful rabbit. Biggest difference there, to her, was the fact that with the monster you were either hunting or being hunted; with a rabbit, it can be the other way around.

"The little guy dug in somewhere over there. I blocked that entrance but I figure he's got a backdoor around here."

It's not as much as a question as it was a statement. Since Lily was put in numerous life and death situations, and being trapped just so happened to be one of them. "Maybe we should set up a trap..."
This is where she remembers the berries, which were lucky enough to have squished into nothing more than mush in those tiny hands of hers.
"Why don't we try using these to lead him out?" And whatever happens next can be up to him.

It wasn't like he had matches to start a fire and try to smoke out the rabbit. Besides, that was bound to attract attention. A cooking fire would be bad enough.
"It's worth a shot," Ken says, but then nods towards the berries, "but we'll probably need more of those."
no subject
Not to mention, the rest of the ones she came across were poisonous. Maybe grabbing a handful of those would have been a brighter idea, in her case.
no subject
"I guess it's worth a shot, if you're still up for it." It was Lily's call. Ken wasn't about to make the girl give up the last of her food on an outside chance.

She simply nods her head, before placing few of the berries near the mouth of the rabbit hole. Then taking a few steps back in order to place the small remainder just about a few feet away.
"Watch out for it, it may come out any minute." Hopefully.

It's all about timing. Waiting for the rabbit to fall into a false sense of security and then striking, quickly, decisively. He's had a lot of experience with that but the targets are generally less wily. It's about being patient, admittedly, not always his strong suit. Still, with no one else in the area and no other obvious prospects, the two of them have time to spare.
wow I accidentally hit new comment. LOL OOPS.
Though the waiting process proved to be a long one. Possibly a good fifteen to thirty minutes before she saw the animal peek its head out of the comfort of its home. Taking notice of the food provided to him and simply hopping out of its hole.
lol, no worries, it's all good.
So far, so good.
Ken nodded slightly to Lily. He wasn't sure how good her aim was but a throwing knife would be a lot more subtle than a sudden lunge with a machete. And if she happened to miss, Ken was more than ready to literally cut the little furball off and prevent him from making an escape.

While she regretted taking another life, she knew that this was an act for survival. Not only for herself, but also Ken now too. And sure enough, once she had thrown the knife in the animals direction, it took only a second before a small thump was heard as the weapon had reached its mark. She also made sure not to damage the small amount of meat it had as well.
With a bright smile, Lily nearly jumped out from behind her little hiding spot, "I got it~!"
Though it wasn't much of a surprise, being born as nothing more than a weapon, she was still excited knowing that she had helped.

"Good work, kiddo," he said. He knelt down and pulled the knife out. "You wanna look around for some kindling or...?" He gestured vaguely to the bunny. Ken was pretty sure she didn't want to skin the thing you never knew...
no subject
"I think... I'll look for the kindling."
no subject
He grabbed the machete and held it out to her, hilt first. "How about I trade you for a little while."
The knife would be much easier to use than the machete but Ken also didn't want to leave Lily completely unarmed or unprotected.
no subject
"Oh, yeah..." She turned over to him for a brief moment, "Are we... in a alliance?"
She thought she might as well ask, due to the fact that they had already been helping each other so far.
no subject
"Oh, huh. I guess we are." If this wasn't an alliance, he didn't know what else to call it. "Be careful out there, okay?"
no subject
With that positive news in mind, Lily could do nothing more than smile as she quickly turned to do her own share of work. Eyes wandering from one location to the next with every step she took.
