Something was very wrong with the deer in this place. At first, Thor hadn't been certain - something, curse or poison, had fouled the air, making his skin prickle and his head throb, and he had suspected the odd look of the creatures might be nothing more than a disturbance to his vision.

After nearly half an hour spent lying almost prone behind a screen of brush, watchin a pair of the animals lip at the foliage coating the forest floor, he was no longer doubting his vision. Now, he merely wanted to know what, exactly, such stunted creatures were meant to do with such an overabundance of legs.

Though the first whisper might not have caught the atention of the deer, it had caught the attention of their watcher. His hand tightened convulsively on the sharpened length of branch he'd been carrying about, and though they'd not responded to the myriad of smaller noises caused by small game and the shifting of the wind, he half expected the deer to bolt now.

That they didn't was almost disconcerting.

Thor levered himself up to one knee, the underbrush rustling with his movement, though less than one might expect with a man of his size. "Are you mad?" he hissed, then paused and squinted at the girl, the oddity of her appearance registering only belatedly.

Suddenly someone was there—oh, no, how hadn't she noticed him before?—and Jade reflexively jumped back, but he hadn't moved towards her or even stood so she didn't start running in fear of her life just yet. "No, I am investigating," she corrected, but it came out more careful-sounding than she'd intended. After a moment, she said, "Lots of these deer are deaf. I think that's important to know." Less importantly, she considered adding, also I wanted to look at their legs because they are neat, but any possible desire to gush about DNA mutations had stopped being a priority.
