Cuthbert took the opportunity to retreat as fast as he had rushed out. There was no reason to stay and make things worse than they apparently already were. He recognized Eponine as he turned to make his escape and manged to spare the time to stop and make sure it was her. He would certainly hear about this later, but for the moment he needed to get Susannah out as fast as he could.
