You could be my luck

Who| Courfeyrac, Marius, Cosette, Joly, Max, and other invited (or uninvited guests)
What| Courfeyrac brings home a stray. Later, the campers gather to watch the nightly soap opera on the projection screen.
Where| 4th floor, near the mammals
When| Week 2, after this & this.
Warnings/Notes| N/A?  No tagging order, make your own threads if you want.  Let's make new CR and tag around!

Courfeyrac was waiting in the hallway outside of the mammal exhibit with his new acquaintance, X5-452, knocking out a pattern on the wall.  It wasn't any sort of standard pattern, but it would be recognizable to the people he hoped were still camped out around the corner as a sign that the approaching footsteps were his and not someone coming to kill them all.

He waited for a response for several seconds before repeating the knocking, then, becoming eager, he called out to the campers in French, "You must answer when I knock, otherwise I will think you are dead.  Fools."

Days of Les Miserables

The initial noise from the screens, amplified by the silence they assumed when they first set up camp, or whenever there was a lull in conversation, was quick to devolve into a constant, background noise that was effortlessly ignored.

Marius, in fact, had not been thinking of the screens for quite some time, having gotten used to its constant, repetitive drone in his ears. So when he heard a different voice speak it was like hearing glass shatter, and the broken monotony yanked his attention.

He jerked his head up, staring at the screens with tired, heavy eyes, and it took a good moment for him to recognize the faces on the screen. His brows drew together as he reached for the person nearest him, shaking them gently on the shoulder before canting his head towards what appeared was a pre-recorded conversation between Enjolras and his mistress.

"I...this IS meant to be real?" Joly asked, and despite the tension of their current situation, or maybe because of it, his voice was shaking with barely suppressed laughter. Enjolras. Enjolras of all people.

"I must admit, this was not the way I had imagined I should first see our guardian again." he managed, glancing at the others for some kind of confirmation that he was not completely insane here. "Still. One cannot help being glad for him in this. Abstinence leaves a lot to be desired, so they say."

Cosette frowned when she was nudged and glanced over at the screen. Oh. Her frown increased and she shook her head. "This is private, we shouldn't be seeing this," she murmured. Oh how she'd be embarrassed to see her most private conversations broadcast for everyone to see... And it was not much, perhaps, between Enjolras and his lady... But it was enough to be inappropriate.

"They do not understand the slightest meaning of privacy in this place, do they?"

Marius pressed his lips together, feeling a little guilty, for it was he who had called their attention to the screen in the first place. He reached for Cosette's hand as if in a silent apology, and aloud he said,

"Cosette is right. It is best that we ignore—"

His voice abruptly died in his throat then, yet he could still hear it lingering among them: An invisible doppelgänger repeating words that had left his lips days ago. With eyes wide in terror and alarm, he snapped his head back to the screen that was now playing a scene with Eponine he had attempted his hardest to banish from his mind.

What was...what had? Though he suspected it was probably wrong of him, Joly found himself unable to look away from that screen. "Forward of the girl." He commented, somewhat amused at first, then, as the video played on, he could not help looking at the real live version of Marius, his head tilted quizzically.

"I never did imagine this happening to you, somehow." He had to admit. "Seduced and all." He added, a slow grin spreading over his face. "So this is what I return to." he added, trying, and failing, to sound stern and put out. "Enjolras has a mistress and you, young Marius, finding yourself invited to young ladies' bedrooms. My, how the world changes someone."

There was some sort of small miracle at play right now. Cosette had initially so distracted by Marius's hand in hers, that she hardly noticed the change in broadcast. She had turned her gaze back to the projection in time for Courfeyrac to leap into her line of sight alarmingly. Smiling a little, and really seeing no reason to question his intents, she gave her husband's hand another squeeze before nodding her head.

"If you would care for the help, I'm more than happy to give it."

She had to be useful in some way, after all. And she hated the fact that the Capitol was projecting private conversations for all to see. This was the easiest way for her to show her distaste.

It was quite by chance that Eponine found herself on the fourth floor. She was bored. Bored of Orc and his stupid conversation: it was like trying to talk to Gueulemer. He was slightly less entertaining than talking to herself. And she was bored of having to mediate between Aunamee and Orc, Montparnasse and Gueulemer, for all she could see. So she had slipped off quietly, avoiding the room of stars where that hateful girl lurked, down and down, until the sparkles had caught her eye. Such jewels.

Eponine had wandered through the corridors quite openly. She wasn't afraid, and she wasn't at all bothered by the idea that she might die. She sauntered along, looking at the exhibits and the strange things that were on display. But then she heard voices.

His.

And her own.

Oh God.

She ran. She ran as fast as she could, picking up the tatters of the pricncess dress she had slashed wildly at in a moment of self destructive despair and ran towards the sound of the voices.

And stopped short when she realised that they were there. That He was. She was. All together.

And she had been left alone.

She stopped short, and drew her glass shard from where she tied it against her stomach with Eva's wire. Her expression was sour. She shouldn't be here, but she couldn't leave now.

She hated every single one of them.

Marius could embrace Courfeyrac tightly right then and there. Instead, he darted Joly a panicked, almost pleading stare, then gave Courfeyrac a curt nod.

"Y-Yes!" He glanced at Cosette then, his voice equally loud as Courfeyrac's so that it blotted out his and Eponine's dialogue on the screen. "You are truly our guardian angel, Cosette. How wretched we would be without your guiding light!"

He had scrambled to his feet, giving a gentle tug at Cosette's hand, hoping to lead her to a spot that effectively blocked her view of the screens. In his trepidation he failed to notice the distant rush of footsteps or that the stage and actor had changed again, although the actress remained the same.

"Well, Monsieur, it depends what you ahould like to do. We hold hands now, so a kiss is perhaps the next stage?"

That caused him to pause, his brows drawn together in confusion—at which terror quickly followed, for he could not recall her saying that to him. Had he forgotten parts of their conversation completely? Against his better judgement he cast another glance at the on-going play, just in time to witness what was, apparently, the beginnings of a recent incident between Eponine and another man.

Right and gentlemanly it was. Joly, for the moment, wanted information, and, well, even knowing that a thing was wrong could not quite prevent him from wanting information. Well, in this instance. Obviously there were cases it was unacceptable. Such as the moment that the display switched from Marius to the young lady and another.

While a part of him was curious about it, it simply felt wrong now that this had no bearing on his immediate social group that he could see. The personal lives of strangers, even relative ones like Eponine were something he had no interest in viewing.

"Really." he muttered at that, glancing now to Marius, raising an eyebrow. "They've done one. Can they not let up a bit on the poor girl?" And then...Oh. Well. her presence was something else entirely. Teasing Marius for having an admirer was one thing. Making light of the young lady herself?

Not right,he decided,turning, frowning.
