One minute he'd been with the kids, racing for the exit as the mountain burned around them, the next he was blind. Deaf.
He was sure the next thing he would see would be the lights of the Capitol...
But then his eyes were opening and his ears were ringing and he realized he was still alive. Blood was leaking from one his ears, hot and sticky down the side of his throat. His nose and throat were on fire, choking on the red-tinged smoke - and he had just enough to time to flatten himself against the curved wall of the tunnel before he was crushed by the runaway car.
"H-ho...ward!" he rasped. "Jul-ie!"
He stumbled for the exit, calling their names, wondering where they could have gone, praying they were alright....
