Awkwardly, Daniel turned at the scrabbling sound of claws. The archaeologist had to lean to the side to see around the other man's shoulder. Daniel was just in time to see the animal hurtling through the air and sink its yellowed teeth into the other Tribute's skin. Blood started to well up.
He hoped to God that the animal wasn't carrying any diseases. The thing clung on with the tenacity of a bulldog, jaws tightening further when the Tribute tried to shake it off. It was only when the Tribute let go of Daniel and grasped it, tearing the rat from the wound, did the thing let go - and that, Daniel suspected, was only because it couldn't have stopped him. It seemed the rat had bought them time; the thrown rat landed with a wet slap against the floor.
The group of rats behind it, the ones that had been about to be on them, rounded. Tails whipping and claws slashing, at their neighbors, they were on the wounded rat in seconds. The rat gave a high-pitched shriek of agony.
Daniel tore his eyes from the sight and looked to the Man. No way. he wasn't about to let him sacrifice himself, not while he could help. It said a lot about the Tribute that he'd actually helped him earlier, and said a hell of a lot more now that he was willing to stay so another Tribute, his competition, could get away. Daniel started to shake his head then thought better of it. He grabbed at his arm instead.
"Not leaving you," Daniel said and he hoped at least the sentiment made up for the lack of a firm delivery. "Come on, while they're busy. Have to check your hand."
(canon blind a bit here, not sure if he bleeds - let me know if it's wrong and I'll fix asap!))
