His breath caught in his throat and surprise overtook everything, expression and thoughts. How long had they been together? They were in a war. He couldn't promise something like that. When would they have time? What about any problems that might come up between them that they hadn't thought of? But hadn't he just asked Sam to abandon his home and family and friends for Bucky? That wasn't any lighter of a question.
"I...Sam..."
He looked away, though didn't move. He shook his head and found Sam's eyes again.
"Ask me again later, okay? And, you don't have to promise me anything either, I know that's not fair...but I can't answer that with a clear head right now and you deserve better from me. I'm sorry." For not being able to answer, for putting him on the spot like that, for his crap timing and desperation not to loose the most important person to him. "But I do want you to ask me later."
