Alain found him too soon. Altaïr tried to rise, but his knees and elbows buckled. He was as helpless as a wounded bird. Best to save his energy for a haphazard counter from the ground if he needed it. He wasn't even sure he would have time to explain his reasoning. The mask lay untouched. He didn't need it any more, and he knew what might happen if he donned it again. He fixed Alain with a dark stare. I could have killed you if I wanted to.

"I wanted to see you for what you really are. And I did. A pity you cannot see the same. I see you wish to submit to the illusion handed to you, but I also see that you wish to place faith in your own eyes. Do you not?"
