It is a reassurance that at least Kurloz wasn’t alone in the end. Sam knows first hand the difference that having a friend there can make. But he still can’t take his eyes off of Kurloz.

It’s not quite an admission of guilt, but it’s close. Sam’d left him alone when he went hunting with Albert. Even though Kurloz should have been fine, and Sam couldn’t have known that he would leave or what would happen if he did, there’s still the little voice that tells him that he shouldn’t have left him alone.
He shakes it off at Albert’s question, turning away from Kurloz’s body to zero in on Albert. “I’m fine, for now. Are you-” But he cuts off the question. Looking closely at him, he can tell that no, Albert isn’t okay. “Shit, let me get a look at you. I’ve still got my med kit stuff.”
