Who| Kankri Vantas and Venus Dee Milo
What| Of course the first time they meet in this arena has to be his tragic death scene.
Where| Some random street
When| Week 4
Warnings/Notes| Severe mental instability, the usual run of Arena problems
Kankri's almost surprised, when he collapses at last. Not that it's happened, no, he was expecting it. But he can't really feel much of anything, except hot all over. Can't feel his legs at all. They were starting to not do what he wanted them to anyway.
He lies against the pavement, quietly wheezing, wondering vaguely what's going to finish him off in the end. Maybe he'll muster the energy to shove his claws through its throat. It isn't right that he's stuck like this.

She's gentle when she finds him nearly unconscious, rolling him into her lap and lightly patting his face. The concern is written into her eyebrows, into her eyes and mouth. Her heart's chugging away inside her neck and all she can think of is Kevin finding Kankri in the stairwell.
When she'd seen the little bundle on the ground in the mists, she'd almost kept walking until she saw the horns. Then she couldn't run to his side fast enough. She didn't mean to find him like this.
"Kankri, are you hurt, are you..." It would be too cruel, to find him dead like this. She presses her ear to his chest, not even sure if that's where trolls keep their hearts.

Then he realizes what that means and lets out an inhuman shriek. He tries to lash out, to drive his claws into something that'll hurt, to drive off his attacker, but he hasn't got any strength left in his arms, he doesn't know if he even hit anything.
"No," he moans. "No, no, no, go away, go away! I'll kill- I'll k-kill- leave me alone, don't hurt me-"
He's too delirious even to recognize her.

She wishes she could teleport now, take him to the shoe store, put cool water from the jugs they have on his feverish forehead. But she can't, and she's too weak to carry him, and she has rarely felt so helpless as she does now.
"Kankri, Kankri, it's me. Venus. It's your friend!"

He reaches up to try and pap her face, but his fingers just barely brush her cheek and then his arm falls again. He moans, his head lolling to the side.
"Venus, I missed you, I was so scared. I can't see- are you okay?"

She takes his wrist and completes the pap for him, letting his hand rest against her face. Then she grunts and, carrying him in her arms, stands.
"Why can't you see? Did someone attack you?"
no subject
He shivers against her. "Why didn't you find me? Why couldn't I find you? I wanted to see you so much. I was scared. Did I do okay? On my own?"
His brain is stuck on the inane idea that he's a disappointment to her now.

"I was looking for you. I'm sorry, honey, I'm sorry I didn't find you sooner..." She doesn't know what else she could have done. She went out every day in the fog calling his name. Teleported everywhere whenever she got her powers back until her cells threatened to rip apart. It's a cruel fate to only find him now. "But I'm here. And you did great. You lasted this long even without me."

"Pale for you," he mumbles. "Paler than the moon and the stars. I'll, I'll do better next time. Come find me when we wake up. Okay?"

She doesn't know what to do. She never needed to learn first aid, and she realizes now that all the hours in the gym could have gone to better use learning to heal. She shakes him and his head flops back, hair plastered and sticky to his forehead from the wet, soupy air.
She cradles him to her breast, the other hand pressing on his chest as if trying to make him continue breathing as he mumbles.
"See, I found you, I'll always find you-"

He loses consciousness around then, going stiff in her arms. For a few moments he looks at peace, as if he's only sleeping.
Then he starts to convulse violently in her arms, and his breathing stops entirely.

She's sure it's manufactured cruelty, to have her find him right before he dies, and the sick thing is that some part of her is applauding the Gamemakers for capitalizing on the melodrama. It's well-played. It's beautifully-timed and tragic. People at home are wiping tears from their eyes as her lovely, poised face crumples like a tin can.
Pretty things are better broken. Bonds are best when they're severed. She holds him close, as if restraining his spasms could stop him dying. He's so small in her arms, even though she's hardly bigger than he is.
She wanted him to win.
"I'll find you."
