The trolls weren't human, after all and everything he'd seen of them made it clear they were survivors and fighters. With Signless not acting like himself, he knew he probably wouldn't stand a chance.

"But you have to be the one to walk away. Because you're going to look back and remember this and probably feel terrible about it and I want you to remember it as me not being willing to just leave you like this."
