The trick was to not look over his shoulder and never run in a straight line. Ducking and dodging around trees and undergrowth, Alex put his reflexes and agility to use, but not expending so much energy that he wouldn't have enough to defend himself once he reached the beach.

And that moment was coming all too soon, as Alex glimpsed blue water through the trees ahead.
