Cuthbert sees what he thinks are Nepeta's horns over the melee that ensues when everyone gets to the weapons. But before he can do anything else, he sees what is unmistakably the barrel of a gun and he can't think of anything but getting to it.

He's only lucky because he's quick and so focused on his goal that he basically doesn't see or acknowledge anything else. It's been so long since he had his hands on a gun he doesn't even quite believe what he's seeing. It's even better in his hand, and he can't wait to load it.

It's not until he has his prize and sees how important it's about to be to flee the scene that he remembers Nepeta and turns back again. Everything is chaos around him but he manages to find her, of course by then, it's too late.
