Joel mostly just listened to the information they were giving him, while the rest of his attention was on their surroundings, taking stock, mentally mapping the place. If they were going to be stuck here for a while, he should get the layout memorized as best he could, after all. Knowing major landmarks, good hiding spots, high ground, likely places for ambush - all of that could be the difference between life and death.
