I'm Friends with the Monster
WHO| Howard, Orc and anyone
WHAT| Howard and Orc set up camp in the labs.
WHEN| Week 4
WHERE| The labs
WARNINGS| Hunger.
NOTES| Interact with one or both!
Howard doesn't like spending too much time on the ground, not after finding out that there are raptors around here, but the idea of getting Orc to climb a tree is outright laughable. So they walk, even though the wake Orc leaves behind him makes Howard nervous. It's not just animal predators they have to worry about.
The more pressing matter, however, is food. They don't have nearly enough rations between them to have even a meal a day. They're both too intimately familiar with this feeling. A step between hungry and desperate. The pain in their bodies that radiates outwards and bores the muscles. Lethargy and exhaustion that smears conscious thought around like grey paint. Howard sets a goal: just keep walking forward, Orc, he'll figure something out. And silently, he hopes he does.
Howard goes ahead, making sure he can hear Orc, and follows a colorful bird that he's only mostly sure isn't a hallucination. It disappears into the sun, but there are two buildings he didn't know existed in these jungles in front of him. Dilapidated, and as he breaks open the door to one he realizes that there's no way he'd trust the second story to bear Orc's weight. Beams drip from the ceiling. Strange rusted metal cages yawn open. A patch of wall is missing, letting the sunset enter like a spotlight.
But none of that matters as much as the empty plastic wrapper on the floor. The crumbs still left inside. Howard drops to his knees on the cement floor and examines the wrapper with his fingertips, notes that the crumbs aren't even moldy.
"Orc," he says, "close the door behind you. We sleep here tonight."
They'll trade off sleeping, one of them watching at all times, after they scour the building for food. Howard will take a place on the catwalk, looking through a busted window and that gaping hole in the wall, and Orc can probably sit in front of the door like a stone sentry.
